It is worth noting that the contingent of players who desire PvP is relatively small, at least on American MMORPGs. Very few servers are devoted to PvP in EverQuest, and some games like City of Heroes and Earth and Beyond have launched without any PvP whatsoever.
It has been noted by many players that, even with PvP implemented in City of Heroes as of Issue 4, very few players participate. Many who enjoy PvP combat claim that this is because there are no tangible rewards for PvP; however, those who do not claim that such rewards would be unfair, as griefers would more readily get them, and further that no reward is sufficient to overcome their distaste for abusive players in PvP zones. Despite the arguments on both sides, a recent merge of the three PvP servers on EverQuest suggests that the demand for open, non-consensual PvP is quite low.
Granite maul
The granite maul (members only) is a very powerful two-handed hammer. It is becoming a notorious tool in the wilderness as it can easily kill an opponent in 3 or 4 hits. It is a semi-rare monster drop from the Gargoyle(members only) that takes a Slayer (members only)level of 75 to kill. The granite maul, along with the abyssal whip, excalibur, rune throwing axe, and rune claws (all being members only items), is one of the only non-dragon melee weapons to have a special attack. The maul's special attack allows a player to quickly attack the enemy even after hitting once already.
The slow and innaccurate attack leads to slower training, but not having to use food and being able to attack monsters that would normally be impossible is a definite advantage. The weapon is not used often in the wilderness as it is expensive, and its single advantage is useless as opponents just move away from you if you attack them through or over an obstacle.
