A character's power usually represents how much time is invested in playing, rather than skill. Casual players are interested in playing a few hours a week, but many hardcore gamers play more than 40 hours a week.
Some games require so much commitment that players have resorted to buying powerful virtual characters and items such as the MMORPG-specific in-game equipment rather than obtaining them through playing the game. World of Warcraft made an attempt to alleviate this problem by rewarding casual players with extra experience points relative to the amount of time they do not play the game ('resting').
An interesting exception to this is Guild Wars which created an unusually low maximum level so the majority of time is spent with all players on equal footing. From the FAQ: "Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild."
Since early 2004, there have been rumors circulating about that hint at the "Summoning" skill. Summoning is generally thought to be little more than an urban legend that occasionally springs up on fansite forums and sometimes the official Jagex forums.
Nevertheless, there are advocates of this skill who insist that it will be a reality sometime before the end of 2005.Due to a recent "Month in review" posted by Jagex many players believed it to have been coming out Monday, October 17, 2005. The month in review stated that there would be a new, long awaited skill which would be an off-branch of an older skill.
This turned out to be death rune crafting. Many players believe that summoning will be implemented into the magic skill (if it comes, that is), and others belive in a new skill coming up!
