To end up in the Wilderness, simply go North long enough in any part of the world. The Wilderness is one of the few places where players may attack each other (others being the Duel Arena, Castle Wars, and the TzHaar Fight Pit & Caves). The Wilderness is made such that the range of players you can attack depends on how far north you go. As you go north, the level of wilderness will increase gradually. At the start, the level of Wilderness is 1, meaning that a player can only attack other players one level higher or lower than their own.

The highest level of wilderness on the free world is 48 (where a gate spanning the entire length prevents anyone from proceeding any further north), while the highest level of Wilderness on a member's world is 56. The members-only section offers many useful features, such as the Agility Course, Mage Arena, a teleport lever to the city of Ardougne, and a couple of combat areas for people to level up.

Also, the "Lava Maze" has a ladder leading underground that is accessable only to members, and the King Black Dragon's domain is similarly only accessable to members. Note that in a multi-combat area of the Wilderness, a player may be attacked by multiple players, as long as they are within range. There are also various item spawns around the Wilderness that can be extremely valuable or useful, such as the Big Bone respawn found at Wilderness level 21. There are many good spots to train in the wilderness such as Green Dragons and Hobgoblins. Attacking another player who has not attacked you within the past 20 minutes will earn you a "Skull"; this is a white skull-and-crossbones icon that hovers over your head. This icon means that, if you should die while it is there, you will lose all of your equipped items; you will not keep your most valuable three as you would normally if you were not skulled.

There are other things to be made besides bows though, like arrows, throwing darts, crossbow bolts, each of which follow a similar pattern of both high and low level versions. With the case of arrows, it's important to make arrows that which a bow can handle, as some higher-level arrows cannot be wielded on low level bows. Bolts do not have this restriction, and as of 2005 only coming in five types, normal, poisoned, Opal, Pearl and Barbed bolts.

The throwing darts again require different skill levels to use a different material set similar to armor and swords, starting with bronze and going up to rune, with better darts needing a higher level of fletching. In the case of darts, the ranged skill determines if it can be wielded. Making darts of too high a level for ranging skill means that the player cannot use them.

After completing the Zogre Flesh Eater quest one can make composite ogre bow and brutal arrows. Brutal arrows come in all the metals that and use nails instead of arrow heads. The composite ogre bows are made with an achey log and wolf bones.
