There is another, less well known way to leave Al-Kharid, even for non-members.

Choose "What is this place?" and then say you are an outlaw.
Refuse to pay, twice, and you will be transported to Port Sarim jail, though you will be then free to go

MMORPGs, on the other hand, typically are set in the realm of "low fantasy", where every player is a relatively minor character in a story involving a vast nation, tribe or clan of other players of approximately equal importance.
